Welwyn Garden City Watch
Welwyn Garden City Watch is a partnership of local retailers, businesses, the police and other organisations. It aims to improve public safety and reduce crime and disorder in the town.
How does it work?
Data collecting / photograph sharing: By being a City Watch member you will have access to information on known thieves and other individuals carrying out criminal activities in the area. This includes photographs of persistent thieves and troublemakers. Having these details means that criminals can no longer enjoy the anonymity and freedom to target businesses.

The Radio Link: Members can be linked together by a radio system and therefore can receive or give information instantly. This allows members to broadcast details of any incidents to other scheme members. This can create an environment where you no longer feel in isolation and can rely on the support from others during a 'real time' crime problem and you can request or offer help in an emergency situation.

CCTV: CCTV can play a major part in crime prevention and detection. Welwyn Garden City is expecting in the future to place cameras in areas that are currently not covered. Combined with 'on the ground' Radio Link information, CCTV can track offenders and assist in their apprehension.

Exclusion Notices: The City Watch can issue notices against  one or more people who have committed a crime against a business or whose behaviour within the area is unacceptable. Named individuals then cannot enter any members' premises for a specified period of time. In addition, the evidence collected by members could also be used to get Anti Social Behaviour Orders from the courts.

The British Retail Consortium Survey revealed a worrying picture of retail crime in the UK with the total cost of crime and violence against staff showing significant increases. Despite a reduction in offences the cost of retail crime has significantly risen. The overall cost of retail crime has increased by 31 per cent to £1.4 billion. This is equivalent to 130,000 retail jobs.
A worrying trend this year is the increase in threats and verbal abuse to retail staff which has increased by 83 per cent when compared to last year. Robberies have also increased by 20 per cent with retailers reporting an increase in the use of weapons and violence.
