WGC Centenary

The Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation has been established as a company limited by guarantee and aquired charitable status in August 2016.

Between now and 2020 it will seek to attract funds, sponsorship and voluntary support to assist in the town’s centenary celebrations and to create a legacy for the benefit of garden citizens into its second century.

If the celebrations are to be a success, then they must be locally rooted, springing from the initiatives of community organisations, businesses, schools, places of learning, local authorities and, of course, the residents themselves. The Foundation will work actively with all these groups, offering coordination and support in the run up to 2020.

More than 300 ideas for functions and events have been submitted by the Welwyn Garden City Residents. From these ideas, the Team have selected 14 to be known as Signature Events which will be managed and delivered during the Centenary Year. The remaining events have not been ignored but are available for any organisations or individuals to take up in their own way with guidance where appropriate from the Team.

WGC Streetscape Design Manual

In undertaking audits of the town centre, the public realm working group became concerned at the general state and appearance of some elements of the town centre’s environment, particularly given its conservation area status.  Being aware that several parties have a role in managing and maintaining the town centre, the group started to review best practice guidance and the approach taken by other Hertfordshire authorities in seeking to establish a standard to which we can all aim.

Initial discussions were held with Hertfordshire County Council highways officers, the borough council’s client services and landscape teams as well as seeking guidance from English Heritage to understand the issues that affect the management and maintenance of the highway, landscaping and street furniture in the town centre.
You can download the document here.

This draft document is the culmination of this work. The manual that is presented aims to establish an overall design guide to inform the work of officers, contractors and others responsible for the management and maintenance of the town centre’s public realm.

The manual highlights that this should be a living document which does require the support and agreement of other parties if its aims are to be successful.

Shopfront Design Guide

The Partnership's Environment Group has prepared a leaflet explaining the type of works that are likely to require planning permission and advising on how the council’s adopted design policies should be interpreted and implemented in the town centre.

Our town centre deserves its status as part of a conservation area, and the Partnership is keen that the environment should help to sustain a thriving centre.  If you feel strongly about other aspects of the town centre’s environment then please do get in touch.
