WGC Business Improvement District

The Welwyn Garden City BID is a not-for-profit company set up by businesses in Welwyn Garden City town centre supported by government legislation to improve the area.

The WGC BID has four main objectives

 - Animated and Attractive
 - Promoted and Celebrated
- Welcoming and Accessible
- A Great Business and Leisure Offer

Footfall was off the charts on Saturday 20th May in Welwyn Garden City town centre, thanks to the first BID event of the year, the World Food Festival.
With businesses reported having had their best Saturday so far in the year, some having taken three times as much as they do on a normal Saturday, the proof is in the pudding.
Over 15,000 people visited the town to enjoy the festival and challenge their taste buds with food from more than 30 different countries. Live music on the World Music Stage got families dancing as Frances Quinn, winner of the Great British Bake-off rocked the cooking demonstration stage with her creative baking tips for enthusiastic foodies.
Bigger and better public events came near the top on the priorities for businesses at the surveys conducted during the BID development stage and it’s good to see that they are having a positive impact on sales as well as footfall.
We have some fantastic events planned for the rest of the year, the Welwyn Garden Petit Tour Cycling Festival is taking place on Sunday 16 July, we are expecting big crowds to come and enjoy a ride around a car free town centre, watch the elite cycling races and take part in lots of activities for the whole family throughout the day.
Cinema on the Green, an all day event during the school holidays is expected to bring families together to the town on Friday 18th August.
We are also re launching Street Food Monthly on Thursday 13th July in a new location on Howardsgate and we are looking at some other new events including Animal Antics, a family event packed full of animal fun and a Garden Festival.
If you’d like to get involved in the planning of all these events you can do so by joining the BID’s Marketing and Events group, just get in touch with me!
Together we can help Welwyn Garden City’s businesses thrive.

Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District
Working together to influence and invest in a vibrant and prosperous town centre
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am delighted to invite you to the launch of the development of the Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District.
Date: Wednesday 24th February
Time:  5:45 p.m. for 6 p.m start to end at 7p.m
Place: Campus West, First Floor, Welwyn Garden City, Herts. AL8 6BX
On Arrival: Canapes and Wine
Please bring along a business card to be entered into our prize draw for a luxury Waitrose hamper!
We want to ensure that the town and our businesses have a vibrant and healthy future.
We need to take advantage of our heritage and our green and family friendly town but at the same time develop a thriving business community.  We need to create a new sense of purpose for the town, a clear direction and a mechanism which gives the businesses an ability to help shape the future of our town.
As a business in Welwyn Garden City, you are invited to a brief presentation and discussion about a Business Improvement District (BID). This is your opportunity to influence the future success of our town.
A BID is a defined area where the rate-paying businesses decide on improvements to their area. They then vote on the plan and agree to invest in the delivery of activities which directly impact upon your business turnover and profit. This money is ring-fenced to provide the improvements agreed through the BID plan and can be used to generate other revenue to boost the pot of money available. We intend to take this plan to a vote later this year.
This opportunity is a business initiative led by Welwyn Garden City businesses. So please come along and find out how you can get involved. This is also a chance for you to meet with your fellow town centre businesses.  I would be grateful if you could r.s.v.p by contacting the BID Team at  Don’t forget your business card!
Yours faithfully

Chris Hooper
Chairman of Welwyn Garden City Town Centre Partnership
